Like so many on Galveston Island, our Galveston Country Club
suffered severe damage from Hurricane Ike. Our management and staff
are working hard clearing debris and preventing further damage to
our Club.
The irrigation pumps and controllers were destroyed by high water as
well as most of our golf course maintenance equipment. Our
irrigation lakes were compromised and have been drained. Though we
do have water wells, there are very strict limits on the amount of
water from this source. Currently, a portable water tank is being
used for hand watering the greens. The Clubhouse had about 6 inches
of water in most areas, with additional water damage from windblown
rain and roof damage. The maintenance building sustained significant
damage to the offices, shop area and equipment parts inventory.
Your Board of Directors has been assessing these damages and
developing a recovery plan for our Club. The consensus of the Board
is that recovery of the golf course is the top priority. Orders have
been authorized for the replacement of all essential equipment
damaged by the storm and should be arriving over the next few weeks.
Our target is to have the golf course in playable condition by the
first of November.
Holiday Builders was awarded a contract in August for the
remodeling/repair of the pro shop and cart barn. Materials for this
work arrived this week and Holiday is proceeding with this work as
planned. This should be completed by the first of December. The
recovery cost for the golf course will prevent the planned
renovation of the Clubhouse in the near term. Insurance adjusters
have been to the Club, but we do not yet know what insurance
proceeds will be forthcoming. Holiday has been asked to work with
the adjusters to develop a scope of work for repair/improvements for
the Clubhouse. Beyond making repairs caused by Hurricane Ike, as
well as much needed repairs to the mechanical, electrical and
plumbing systems; the vision is to add fresh new colors and
furnishings throughout the Clubhouse.
The Board of Directors and the Club’s staff understand the
importance of bringing Galveston Country Club back to prominence
expected by our members, while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
You will be kept informed as details and schedules are developed for
the recovery plan. If there are questions or concerns regarding this
information, please contact our General
Manager Knute Lund or any of the Board members. Your support and
patience in this recovery are very much appreciated.
